WARLORD LAWRENCE BUKOSE DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT

¶1. Summary: (S) On Thursday at 11:20am, Lawrence Bukose and two members of his militia were killed in a car accident after their SUV crashed on a road just outside of Chingola. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. END SUMMARY.

PROFILE OF LAWRENCE BUKOSE
————————–

¶2. (S/NF) Lawrence Bukose is a Zambian warlord based in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. He rose to power by controlling several major roads that lead to the mines located in Chingola, Mufulira, and Ndola. According to recent reports from the ZPS, Bukose’s operations have increased to extorting mining companies and charging foreign corporations for road access.

THE ACCIDENT
————

¶3. (SBU) On Thursday at 11:20am, Lawrence Bukose and two members of his militia were traveling in an SUV along Solwezi Road (T3) just outside of Chingola. Near the intersection leading to the Chiwempala Social Club, the SUV swerved off the road and smashed into a concrete wall. All three men were killed. An initial investigation by local law enforcement found nothing unusual. All tire marks and debris indicate a typical car accident.

¶4. (S) However, after the wrecked SUV was brought to a nearby police station, investigators did locate what appeared to be a large bullet hole in the car near the area of the combustion chamber. However, due to the condition of the SVU and because of Bukose’s chosen line of work, it was impossible for investigators to determine if the bullet hole was present before the accident and if it caused the incident in any way.

¶5. (SBU) Inside the SUV, authorities found 2 AK-74M assault rifles, a GSh-18 semi-automatic handgun, and a half ounce of marijuana. As of this post, autopsy reports are not yet available.

RIVARLY WITH DEDE MACABA
————————

¶6. (C) Recent reports from the ZPS indicate an increasingly violent rivalry between Bukose and warlord Dede Macaba. A war criminal in Angola, Dede Macaba fled to Zambia and set up shop in several refugee camps along the Angola-Zambia border. Numerous firefights have broken out in the past months between the two militias. A majority of the clashes have occurred in the North-Western and Copperbelt Provinces where the two groups have been battling for control of the major roads that lead to mines.

COMMENT
——-

¶7. (C) In spite of the violent rivalry between Bukose and Macaba, no physical evidence appears to suggest that Macaba was involved in Bukose’s death. Even if the accident was faked, Macaba’s organization lacks the resources and know-how to pull off such a coordinated stealth assassination on their own. For now, Bukose’s death appears to be an accident but the investigation continues. Post will be updated as new information becomes available. END COMMENT.
